Abstract

Apparatus suitable for moulding a flexible plastics printing plate comprises a base member 10 supporting a lower platen 12 adapted to receive on its flat surface 22 a matrix 16 having an image face, an upper platen 19, and pivotal means connecting the two platens, said means having two spaced pivot axes (56), (66), Fig. 2 (not shown), disposed parallel to an edge of the platen 12 and arranged so that the platen 19 can be moved first about the axis (56) to a position, Fig. 3 (not shown), of proximity to the platen 12 and then about the axis (66) to a position, Fig. 4 (not shown), parallel to the platen 12 and at a predetermined distance therefrom. A frame 14 is located around the platen 12 to clamp the matrix in position and provide in its closed position a dam for resin which is supplied by a gun 26, at least a portion of the resin being supplied along the rear marginal edge of the matrix. The frame 14 includes inner knife edges (28), Fig. 6 (not shown), and is closed by rod means 30 or by hydraulic or pneumatic means. Both platens may be heated and may carry a polytetrafluoroethylene coating and the lower platen is provided with a vacuum system to keep the matrix flat. The spacing between the platens in the closed position may be adjusted and measured. The two part closing action of the platens facilitates the discharge of air from the thermosetting resin before moulding owing to the squeezing action employed. A plate which is not subject to shrinkage may be moulded using a highly porous fibrous insert (74), Fig. 6 (not shown). Suitable materials for the plate are stated to be polyurethanes, epoxy resins, and silicone elastomers.
