Abstract
1,202,455. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. FUJIKURA CABLE WORKS Ltd. 29 Aug., 1968, No. 41310/68. Heading B5K. [Also in Division H1] A plastics insulation B is applied to an electrical wire A, e.g. to form a core for a coaxial cable, Fig. 1, by continuously extruding a plastics tape B, longitudinally advancing the wire A, the tape B and a forming tape D in superimposed relation forming, the tapes B, D around the wire A with the tape D on the outside of the tape B, heating the tape B so that it surrounds the wire and peeling off the tape D from the tape B. The tape B, e.g. of polyethylene or polystyrene, is extruded from an extruder 1 to pass between moulding rolls 2 to form thin margins a and protrusions a 1 , a 2 on one face thereof. The tape B is trimmed by a cutter 3 and passes between rolls 4, over dancer rolls 5, 5<SP>1</SP> and a guide roll 6 to a heated forming device 7. The wire A passes from a supply 8 over guide rolls 9, 9<SP>1</SP> to the device 7. The tape D, e.g. transparent cellulosic film, paper, metallized paper or a combination of transparent cellulosic film and paper, is fed from a supply 10 and over guide rolls 11, 12 to the device 7. If the tape D is made of paper, silicone oil is applied by a unit 13 to one surface thereof to prevent adhesion to the tape B. In the device 7, the tapes B, D are wrapped around the wire A and heated to 60-70‹ C. The inner surface of the device 7 is coated with polytetrafluoroethylene. The outer diameter is adjusted by a die 16 and the longitudinal edges of the tape B are butt welded by hot air from a unit 15 blown into a slotted guide 14. The insulated wire is cooled at 17 and passes through a unit 18 to measure the electrostatic capacity thereof so that the speed of an extractor 19 and the temperature within the guide 14 may be adjusted, if necessary. The insulated wire is taken-up at 20. In a modification (not shown), the unit 15 and the guide 14 are omitted and the edges of the tape B are butt welded in the device 7.
