Abstract
1,201,171. Conversion of explosives or other material into fine particles. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 20 March, 1968 28 [March, 1967], No. 14163/67. Heading B1X..[Also in Division C2] A normally crystalline substance such as pentaerythritol tetranitrate is converted into fine particles by pumping a solution of the substance, in a solvent such as acetone, through tube 4 and nozzle 35 into a shallow cylindrical vessel 1 wherein the solution forms a suspension in a helical flow of gas, e.g. compressed air, supplied through pipe 5, annulus 32 and orifices 33, and pumping into the suspension, through tube 13 and nozzle 43, a liquid such as demineralised water, which is a non-solvent for the substance but is miscible with the solvent, whereby a turbulent dispersion is formed from which the required fine particles of substance are precipitated. A large proportion of the turbulent dispersion circulates down through cyclone 2, and a separate stream is carried by gas, through the opening at the top of vessel 1, to an external cyclone. A slurry of fine particles in mixed liquid is withdrawn from both cyclones, and is filtered. The wet particles may be dried on trays in a vacuum cabinet. Tubes 4 and 13 may be made of polyethylene. Fine particles of the following explosive substances may be produced:- nitromannite, cyclotrimethylene trinitramine, cyclotetramethylene tetranitramine, tetryl, ethylenedinitramine, and trinitrotoluene.
