Abstract

1,200,524. Cable reels; laggings; winches. RUSTON-BUCYRUS Ltd. 9 Aug., 1968 [17 Aug., 1967], No. 38042/68. Headings B8B and B8M. A cable drum having a core and end flanges 1, 2 is fitted with a cylindrical lagging shell which comprises a plurality of curved segments 7, 7<SP>1</SP>, the curved ends of which are slidably received in continuous circular grooves 5 in the facing flat surfaces of the flanges intermediate the core and the flange peripheries, a portion 11 of at least one flange being cut away to expose the groove 5 and define an access opening 6 of sufficient angular extent to receive each of said curved segment 7, 7<SP>1</SP> so that the segments can be inserted and removed in serial fashion, a closure being adapted to be removably attached to said flange to close the opening 6, said closure comprising a rim sector 11 with a curved edge which re-establishes the continuity of the groove. One curved segment 7<SP>1</SP> is provided with notches 8, 10 at diametrically opposed corners, the notch 8 also having a cable guide 9 for cable 3 wound on the drum. The closure 11 preferably comprises a laminated structure 16, 17 with a recess 14 forming the continuation of the groove 5 and a lug 15 engaging the notches 8 or 10 to prevent rotation of the lagging. The closure 11 is secured in position by bolts. In an alternative arrangement the closure comprises just the inner lamination 17.
