A method of making fish hooks from wire includes swaging the wire 2 at intervals, cutting the swaged sections to form a blank having a sharp point at each end and bending an intermediate portion of the blank, forming barbs at at least one end of the blank and bending the barbed end or ends to form a hook. The wire 2 is fed from a drum 1 through a straightening mechanism 5 from which a carriage 21 of a feed mechanism 6 delivers it to a swaging mechanism 7 provided with strikers 22, 22<SP>1</SP>. After swaging the wire is fed to a device 8 in which cutters 23, 25 cut it into blanks and form sharp points at both ends of each blank. The blanks are simultaneously bent in the middle by a punch and die. The bent portion is located over a guide 28 and its ends rest on screws 27 and as the screws rotate the blank is transferred to barb cutting mechanisms 11, 11<SP>1</SP> where cutters 29, 291 successively cut the barbs on opposite ends. Instead of being bent, the blank may be swaged in the middle for centering on the guide 28 in the manufacture of flat end hooks. The blank is next moved by the screws 27 to a hook-forming mechanism 12 wherein two pairs of levers bend the ends of the blank on formers (33), Fig. 4 (not shown), after which pushers (34) move the blank along the formers (33) to a final shaping mechanism 14. In the mechanism 14, the bent centre portion of the blank is formed into a ring. Finally, the ends of the hook are set at an angle to each other, e.g. 120 degrees. When making single hooks, the blank is severed at its bent centre portion and the cut ends formed into rings.
