Abstract
1299921 Cooling towers BALTIMORE AIRCOIL CO Inc 30 Jan 1970 [31 Jan 1969 21 May 1969 27 Oct 1969] 4721/70 Heading F4K In an injector type evaporative cooling tower comprising a plurality of water atomizing nozzles 31 located at the inlet end 32 of an injector in the form of a Venturi 33 into which cooling air is sucked and admixed with the water issuing from the nozzle, cooled water is collected in the bottom of a moisture separating chamber 17 and the separated warm air is discharged to the atmosphere through vertical exhaust ducts 22, 23. A baffle 37 separates the incoming and discharging air streams so preventing the possibility of recirculation. To increase the capacity of the cooling tower several Venturis can be used. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) a plurality of Venturi injectors- (40-43) are arranged around a central frusto conical air discharge stack (44) the top of which is disposed well above the inlets to the injectors (40-43). The Venturis may have a circular or trapezoidal cross-section (see Figs. 11 A-C). In a modification (Figs. 5-9, not shown) the cooling tower comprises two Venturis (60, 61) arranged on opposite sides of a common discharge stack (62), the Venturis and stack being of rectangular cross-section. Mist eliminators (78, 79) are disposed across the outlet of the Venturis. In a further embodiment (Fig. 12, not shown) the Venturi injector and spray nozzle (87) are arranged to be substantially horizontal. In another embodiment (Fig. 13 not shown) the cooling tower comprises an enclosure (98) having an air inlet (99) located above a sump (100). A perforated baffle extends across the enclosure above the air inlet and supports an upwardly extending Venturi (94) provided with a hot water spray nozzle 102) at its lower end. Cooled water separated out from the air stream collects on the perforated plate from whence it passes down through the incoming air stream to the sump (100). The separated exhaust air exits to the atmosphere through the top of the enclosure.
