1299443 Closing containers; containers; trays PLASTONA (JOHN WADDINGTON) Ltd 23 March 1970 [5 May 1969] 22876/69 Headings B8C B8D and B8P A lid of sheet material (not shown) is sealed to an outwardly-directed flange 22 of a polystyrene tray 10, which is provided with an inwardly-directed shoulder 18 spaced beneath the flange, whilst supporting the underside of the flange. The shoulder may extend around the whole periphery of the tray or along two opposite sides of the tray. The lidding sheet may be of polystyrene-coated aluminium foil, cellulose film, or paper sealed to the flange by a heated die whilst at least part of the flange is supported on its underside by means for moving the tray past the die, such as a conveyer tracks or chains. The support may be a split support die, which is opened and closed for reception of the tray automatically by the cams or followers actuated by the motion of means moving the tray past the heated die. Alternatively, the lidding sheet carries a heat-activatable styrene adhesive, said adhesive preferably being activated prior to the sheet being applied to the flange, and the sheet is pressed on to the flange by a soft rubber roller. The tray is reinforced by wall ribs 16. The arrangement of locating the flange above the shoulder permits the overall dimensions of the container to be lessened and hence save space necessary for storing stacks of the containers.
