1299299 Carbinols R FIRMENICH G FIRMENICH R E FIRMENICH and F H FIRMENICH [trading as FIRMENICH & CIE] 22 July 1970 [22 July 1969 18 Dec 1969 8 July 1970] 11542/72 Divided out of 1299298 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of the formulae The compound of Formula I is prepared by oxidizing valencene with triplet oxygen, followed by reduction of the oxidation products or by oxidizing valencene with singlet oxygen, isomerizing the product, and reducing the isomerized product. Compounds of Formulae II and III are prepared by oxidizing valencene with singlet oxygen, followed by reduction of the oxidation products. The compound of Formula I may also be obtained by isomerizing the compound of Formula II. Neothatone may be obtained by oxidizing compounds of Formula I or II.
