Abstract
1298567 Polyimide-amine resins TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 17 Dec 1969 [19 Dec 1968] 61616/69 Heading C3R A polymeric precursor of a thermally-stable polyimide-amine resin substantially consists of a plurality of units derived from an at least diprimary amine alternating with units derived from an optionally substituted maleic acid monoester or anhydride, R 1 and R 2 representing the carbon atoms of the acid component and substituents when present. One mole of diamine may be amidized with 1 or 2 moles of anhydride or mono-ester and polymerization then effected by addition of -NH 2 , from the amidization product or further diamine, to the double bond. Reaction may be effected in bulk or solution. Specified optional substituents include hydroxy, alkoxy, carbamoyl and cyano. Numerous reactants and solvents are mentioned. Aqueous solutions of the precursor may be obtained by neutralizing it with ammonia or an amine. Materials which may be incorporated with the prepolymer prior to cure are organic plasticizers; fillers, e.g. powdered or fibrous silica, mica, TiO 2 , CaCO 3 , diatomaceous earth, clay, talc, glass, asbestos, polyimides, polybenzoxazoles and polybenzimidazoles; and thermal stabilizers, e.g. phosphorus acids and esters or oxides of arsenic, antimony and manganese. Examples illustrate the preparation and curing of solutions obtained by heating maleic anhydride, its reaction product with methanol or dimaleamide acids of various diamines with diamines in solvents. The preparation of the dimaleamide acids is not described and no evidence is provided to indicate the structure of the products obtained in the examples. Uses.-Specified uses for the precursor are dry-cast films which may then be cured; prepregs of cloth or glass fibre, cellulose, nylon, polyester or mica-glass cloth tape for fibrereinforced articles or use as an adhesive interlayer; and as an impregnating varnish for magnet coils.
