1296583 Waste-outlet; supply and overflow fittings; plugs TWYFORDS Ltd 23 Aug 1971 [31 Oct 1970] 51873/70 Heading A4N [Also in Division F2] A waste outlet fitting of the type having a "pop-up" plug or closure member operable by a manual control comprises a manually-rotatable control member operatively connected to a member having a ramp surface in such a manner that rotation of the control member in one direction causes the ramp surface to advance transversely of the axis of movement of the plug and co-operate with a part on or of the plug to cause lifting of the plug into its open, raised, position, whilst rotation of the control member in the opposite direction causes the ramp surface to be retracted and allows the plug to fall to its closed position. An embodiment of the waste outlet fitting for a wash-basin, bath or bidet has a one piece waste outlet body 3, Fig.1, held in a mounting aperture 1a by a clamping nut 5, with a plug 2 vertically-movable within the body between a closed, lower, position in which the plug head 6 engages a seat 7, and an open, raised, position in which the plug head is spaced from its seat. A rotatable control shaft 25 carries at its lower end a crank 24 having a crank-pin 23 on which is pivotally mounted a connecting rod or bar 21. A plunger 9 having a wedge-shaped end 9a and a cylindrical portion 9b is slidably mounted within a sleeve 8 and is connected at the end 20 to the connecting rod or bar 21. Rotation of the control shaft 25 causes, by action of the crank 24 and connecting bar 21, the plunger 9 to advance towards the axis of movement of the plug, whereupon the ramp surface 17 of the wedge shaped end 9a of the plunger engages the lower end edge 18 of the tail 19 of the plug 2 and causes the plug to lift. When the plunger is in its fully advanced position the edge 18 rests upon the cylindrical portion 9b of the plunger, so that the plug cannot fall. The control shaft 25 is joined to an upper shaft 27 by coupling 26, the upper shaft carrying at its top end a control handle. The control shaft 25 may be of non-circular cross-section, or, if of circular cross-section, the crank may be locked on to the shaft by a pinch-screw. In some applications the coupling 26 may be dispensed with and a single control shaft used. SUPPLY FITTINGS The control handle may form part of a water supply fitting (33), Fig.2 (not shown) or, if the waste outlet fitting is for use with a bidet the control handle may also operate a diverter valve, Fig.3, so that when the waste outlet is closed, valve member 39 is in a lowered position and water supplied to chamber 40 flows, via chamber 41 to the rim of the bidet and when the waste outlet is opened by rotation of the control handle 38, the valve member is moved to an upper position and water from chamber 40 flows, via passage 42 to the spray of the bidet. OVERFLOW FITTINGS The body 3, Fig.1, may have at its upper ends cut-outs 28, whereby, in the event of the basin or the like overflowing, water can enter the cut-outs from the overflow passage 29 and be discharged through an annular clearance 30 between the plug 2 and body 3.
