Abstract

1295251 Fuel elements UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 13 Oct 1970 [30 July 1969] 38289/69 Heading G6C A fuel element for a CO 2 -cooled nuclear reactor has the fuel enclosed in a protective metal (e.g. stainless steel) sheath, the outer surface of which has a coating of a metal selected from the group: Cu, Ag, Au, Rh, Ir, Ru and Re, or of an alloy of two or more metals in the group. The use of such a coating at least reduces and possibly suppresses altogether the spalling of oxides from the sheath, and provides a surface which will not catalyse the decomposition of organic contaminants in the coolant, which decomposition .would give rise to a deposit of free carbon on the sheath and affect heat transfer. The coating may be applied by electroplating, a thickness of about 0.0005 inch being satisfactory. Diffusion between the sheath and the coating is preferably inhibited by the provision of a diffusion barrier between the two as, for example, by preoxidizing the sheath or by providing aprecoating of a non-diffusible metal such as molybdenum or tungsten.
