Abstract

129,426. Hadfield, Sir R. A. July 8, 1918. Alloys.-Ferro-manganese is decarbonized by treatment with manganese ore in an electric or other furnace. Carbon is added to the charge to reduce manganese dioxide in the ore to monoxide, and slag-forming material such as lime may be added after starting the process. Manganese may be reduced from the. slag at the end of the process by adding ferro-silicon, and finally a small addition of calcium silicide may be added to render the slag more fluid.
