Abstract

1293772 Spray carburetters; extra air valves INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS 18 Dec 1969 [24 Dec 1968] 61742/69 Heading F1B In an I.C. engine having at least one cylinder and having a carburetter in which the throttle valve 5, Fig.1, closes the induction passage 1 completely during idling, the idling mixture being supplied to the engine through a by-pass passage 12, means are provided for reducing the emission of noxious constituents in the engine exhaust gases during engine deceleration with the throttle valve closed and the engine speed above a predetermined value, e.g. 800 r.p.m. The means, which may also be responsive to conditions of the clutch or gear-box of an associated vehicle comprises a valve 17 which during such decelerations closes the idling passage 12 and opens a passage 20 to allow the engine cylinder to receive air via an orifice (22), Figs.1A, 1B, 1C (not shown), positioned immediately upstream of the cylinder inlet valve. The valve 17 is moved to the position shown by an electrical coil 19 which is energized by a battery (24), Fig.2 (not shown), when a pair of series connected switches (i) and (R) are closed. The switch (i) is closed when the throttle valve 5 is closed, by a cam (29), Figs.3A, 3B (not shown), incorporated in the throttle valve actuating linkage. The switch (R) is closed when the voltage between the terminals of a dynamo (D) exceeds a predetermined value, or when the output voltage of a tachometric device (T), Fig. 5 (not shown), exceeds a predetermined value, the device (T) being connected with the contact breaker (A) of the engine ignition circuit so that its output voltage varies as a function of the breaking frequency of the contact breaker. Moreover, the primary winding (34) of the ignition coil can be isolated by a switch (37) operated electrically by a coil (38) connected in series with the switches (i and R) so that the engine ignition is switched off during the engine decelerations. The throttle valve actuating linkage incorporates a pin-and-slot lost-motion device (30, 31) whereby the valve 17 is caused to open momentarily before the throttle valve, and vice versa in the closing direction. The valve 17 may incorporate means for pre-setting the idling flow-rate, Fig.4 (not shown).
