Abstract
1293187 Heating granular materials UPPER CANADA MFG Ltd 24 Nov 1969 57455/69 Heading F4U [Also in Division B1] Granular material is heat-treated in a vessel 1 by being fluidized by means of pressurized gas fed through the bottom of the vessel, the granular material being thereby brought into contact with a heating element. The granular material used is foundry sand which is to be heated to burn off the bonding resin. In the form shown the vessel is tall and narrow and closed at its lower end by a bottom plate 23 through which compressed air is applied. The sand is supported by a fine screw 44 held between two perforated plates. The heating element consists of a duct for the products of combustion of a gas or oil burner. It enters the vessel at the bottom, makes a double U-bend and ends in a vent at the top. The vessel is initially partly filled with clean sand and pieces of used foundry moulds are added. The resin burns off in the fluidizing air and the purified sand is removed via a downwardly extending tube entering the vessel about half-way up. A flap normally closes the lower end of the tube.
