1287968 Chucks ERICKSON TOOL CO 4 Aug 1970 37618/70 Heading B3B A chuck comprises a body 2, a plurality of jaws 4 at least one of which is radially movable, actuator means e.g. wedge block 7, movable transversely of said jaw 4 and having inclined teeth 6 intermeshing with teeth 5 on said jaw to move the latter radially responsive to transverse movements of the wedge block 7, and lock means e.g. locking pin 8, engageable with said jaw when said teeth 5 and 6 are disengaged during a jaw change or reversing operation to retain the jaw 4 in the body in the event of inadvertent rotation of the chuck while said teeth are disengaged said lock means being releasable by manually operated external release means e.g. unlocking member 27. To disengage the teeth 5 and 6 the wedge block 7 is moved transversely to an end position whereupon a recess 24 allows a plunger 23 to move radially inwardly which releases the locking pin 8. Manual depression of member 27 releases the locking pin 8. The wedge block 7 is moved by a screw 11 having a wedge adjusted end seating to pre-load the screw. The driven wedge block 7 is connected to other wedge blocks for each jaw by engagement of a spigot 21 in a driving annular ring 18. Alternative locking arrangements are provided in which a manual member is pulled to release the locking pin (Figs. 5, 6, not shown); and in which the operating means for the locking pin act to lock the jaw when centrifugal forces are acting (Figs. 8-12, not shown). In these latter arrangements the recess for receiving the radial plunger is provided in the driving ring 18; or a spring biased striker is mounted in the ring 18 to be actuated by a radial plunger.
