Abstract
1287568 Gas burners SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 4 Dec 1969 [5 Dec 1968] 57858/68 Heading F4T A gas burner comprises an outer annular body part 1 and an inner barrel part 2 both receiving a coolant and between the parts 1 and 2 there is positioned a partition wall 5 to form annular channels 3, 4 for the supply of oxidant and gaseous fuel respectively, the partition wall 5 being inset from the body part 1 and the barrel part 2 at its downstream end and having its crosssection increased thereat to form a bluff body 6 with a flat end face 7. The fuel and oxidant from channels 4, 3 discharge into a common duct 9 downstream of the bluff body 6 which acts to assist mixing of the fuel and oxidant and to achieve pre-stabilization of the flame in a flame chamber 13 (see Fig. 3) whose upstream end is constituted by the end faces of parts 1 and 2 and the lateral wall 14, which is movable to adjust the length of the flame chamber 13 has coolant circulated therein. In the burner of Fig. 1 which gives an elongated flame the channels 3, 4 are of uniform cross-section throughout their whole length but in the embodiment of Fig. 2 which gives "umbrella"-type flames, the channels 3, 4 are reduced in cross-section at their discharge end and the bluff body 6 is formed as a conical ring restricting the oxidant channel 3. The conical space of the barrel part 2 may have baffles to ensure proper circulation of coolant. The burner of Fig. 2 is said to reduce noise and prevent flame lift-off.
