Abstract

1283569 Additions to molten metal baths ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AB 22 Dec 1969 [23 Dec 1968] 62279/69 Heading C7D A method of manufacturing an alloy is characterized in that into a melt in a ladle or furnace is forced downwardly, while the melt is being stirred by means of electromagnetic stirring or gas flushing, at least one alloying agent and/or deoxidant in the form of a rod or wire having a boiling point higher than the temperature of the melt, the downward forcing being either by means of an externally applied mechanical force or by means of an additionally applied weight upon the rod or wire, at such a rate that the downward force is sufficient to counteract the upward thrust due to the displacement of the melt by the immersed rod or wire, so that the lowermost part of the rod or wire is immersed into the lower part of the melt. As an example Al rods are added to a bath containing Fe, C and Si such that the final Si content is 1À0-3À5% by weight, the Al content 0À15-0À90% and the "Al yield" (as defined in the Specification) 70-80%. In addition silicon/iron, silicon/calcium and/or calcium / aluminium may be introduced. The rod should preferably have a transverse dimension of not less than 20 mm and may have a square or circular crosssection.
