Abstract

1282324 Removing Fe from titaniferous material BRITISH TITAN Ltd 22 July 1970 [31 July 1969] 38474/69 Headings C1A and C1N A particulate titaniferous material is contacted at elevated temperatures with a gaseous hydrocarbon containing 1-4 carbon atoms until the iron content is wholly Fe<SP>2+</SP>, and then leached with HCl to form FeCl 2 solution. The hydrocarbon may be natural gas, methane, ethane, propane, n- or iso-butane, ethylene, propylene, or mixtures thereof. Reduction may be effected at 600-1100‹ C. in a fluidized bed. The temperature may be controlled by introduction of inert gas or of oxidizing gas to burn some of the hydrocarbon. The initial material may be preoxidized ilmenite, and may have an average particle size of 50-300 Á. The HCl may have a concentration of 18-22% and a temperature of from 50‹ C. to b.pt. The upgraded material may be chlorinated to give TiCl 4 which is oxidized in vapour phase to TiO 2 , or may be dissolved in H 2 SO 4 and hydrolysed to give TiO 2 . The FeCl 2 may be converted into Fe oxide or Fe.
