Abstract

1281307 Welding by fusion COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 29 Dec 1970 [5 Jan 1970] 61548/70 Heading B3R [Also in Division G2] A method of weld testing comprises placing a wire or film of tracer material 18, which diffuses within the material 14 constituting the part when the material 14 is in the liquid state, prior to welding at the minimum depth to be attained by the weld, the presence or absence of the tracer material in the plasma 20 above the weld zone being detected by optical spectrography of the plasma. The spectrography may be by emission or by atomic absorption. The welding may be by electron beam, arc or plasma welding. When the base material 14 is U, the tracer may be Mo, Ti or Cu. When the base metal is Mg, the tracer may be Cu, Zr or Al. A wire or film of a second tracer material may be placed at the maximum depth of weld required, the absence of this tracer in the plasma indicating that the maximum depth is not reached.
