Abstract

1277393 Fruit and vegetable juices MERCK & CO Inc 16 Sept 1970 [17 Sept 1969 29 June 1970] 44276/70 Headings A2B and A2D [Also in Division C6] Beverages containing Vitamin C in an amount of from 0.084 to 0.675 mg/ml based on a single strength drink and, optionally, metabolically available iron or food colour, are stabilised with 0.3-3.0%, based on the Vitamin C weight, of cysteine. Fruit and vegetable juices and manufactured drinks containing synthetic flavouring may be fortified with a composition comprising, per 1000 parts of Vitamin C, 3 to 30 parts of cysteine, e.g. as cysteine hydrochloride, and up to 3000 parts of metabolically available iron (expressed as elemental iron). The composition may be applied to beverage or juice concentrates, frozen or unfrozen. Juices: orange, lemon, grapefruit, grape, cherry, apricot, apple, pineapple, cranberry, tomato, prune, beet, carrot, celery, parsley, spinach and green pepper. Iron: elemental iron, ferrous fumarate, gluconate, lactate, succinate and sulphate, ferric chloride and phosphate, and ferric ammonium citrate. Flavouring: orange, cherry, grape, cola, root beet and ginger ale. There is disclosed a formulation containing concentrated orange juice (or fresh or reconstituted frozen orange juice), sugar, corn syrup, fumaric acid, citric acid, food colour, Vitamin C, cysteine and water.
