Abstract
1276659 Recovery of sulphur ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 5 Sept 1969 [9 Oct 1968] 47893/68 Heading C1A A process for recovery of sulphur from sulphur containing compounds comprises passing the sulphur containing compound through a fluidized bed of metallic oxide or carbonate which reacts with the sulphur-containing compound to form metallic sulphate, the metallic sulphate is passed to a regenerator and decomposed to the oxide and SO 2 gas, and the SO 2 is mixed with H 2 S and the two reacted to form sulphur. The preferred metallic oxide is calcium oxide, and the preferred carbonate is calcium carbonate. The metallic sulphate may be decomposed by passing hydrogen sulphide through the regenerator. A modified form of the process comprises passing a minor portion of a hydrogen sulphide through the regenerator, and mixing the SO 2 thus formed with the major portion of the H 2 S stream, and the mixed stream is passed to a converter where the reaction to sulphur takes place. The off gases are passed to a condenser where the sulphur is condensed out and the remaining gases are passed to the fluidized oxide bed to remove sulphur compounds. Before passing the gases to atmosphere the fluid bed of oxide may conveniently be located in the base of a stack for removal of sulphur compounds from flue gases before passing them to atmosphere.
