Abstract

1275435 Metallurgical converters VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN UND STAHLWERKE AG 19 Aug 1969 [21 July 1969] 41423/69 Heading F4B In a tiltable converter 1 having a refractorylined steel jacket 3, 4, 5, a water cooling arrangement is provided for the frusto conically shaped upper portion 3 of the steel jacket. As shown, a cooling jacket 18, arranged around the upper part of the converter, comprises a portion 19 rigidly connected to a flange 6 at the rim of the converter, a trough-shaped part 20 welded to the jacket 4 above the carrying ring 9, and a circular pipe 21, welded between the parts 19 and 20, from which a number of tubes 22, 23, 24 (see Figs. 2-3) lead into the interspace of the cooling jacket 18. The tubes, which are all of different lengths, are provided with guide plates 25 for the water streams 31. The cooling water is supplied into the circular pipe 21 by one or two pipe lines 27, 28, a bore 44 being provided through the carrying ring 9 and the trunnions 10, 11 for guiding the said pipes therethrough. The water running from the jacket 18 is collected at the bottom 46 of the trough-shaped part 20, passing through draining tubes 32, 33 either by gravity or by being drawn off by means of a pump. Openings 47 are provided in the part 20 for admitting air into the jacket 18 and to prevent a build-up of pressure in the interspace due to steam formation. Two further draining tubes 34, 35 are arranged in the upper part of the interspace, for drawing off the cooling water in the tilted positions of the converter (see Fig. 4). The draining tubes 32-35 are installed within the carrying ring 9 and are guided through the said bores 44 into open, coaxial tubes 29, 36, 38 and 30, 37, 39 respectively, also suitably installed in the trunnions 10, 11. A switch can be connected to the tilting drive for the converter to close and open individual valves in the drawing pipes depending on the position of the converter.
