Abstract

1,274,334. Variable speed gear control. BRITISH LEYLAND (AUSTIN-MORRIS) Ltd. 19 April, 1971 [7 March, 1970], No. 11009/70. Heading F2D. A gear selector mechanism comprises a first 17 of three mutually perpendicular shafts 17, 14, 4 rotatable and axially slidable by a manual gearshift lever (not shown) having a radial arm 16 selectively engaging recesses 15 in at least two bell cranks 8, 9 pivotable about the shaft 14 and having their other ends in permanent engagement with shift forks (2), Fig. 2 (not shown), 3 relatively slidable along the shaft 4, the shaft 17 having a sleeve 18 with a collar 19 slit axially at 20, rotatable with the shaft 17 but axially fixed (e.g. by a hollow pin 24 engaging a secantal slit 23) and arranged so that the collar 19 engages the recesses 15 not engaged by the arm 16. There may be a third bell crank 10 for axially sliding a reversing pinion. One of the forks 3 may be pinned at 5 to the shaft 4 to slide therewith. Ratios may be held by detents 21 acting either on the shaft 17 or on hub extensions of the forks 2, 3. The shaft 17 may be biased rotatively to its central (neutral) position by a torsion spring 40 engaging pins 38, 39 on the gear case and shaft respectively. The pin 39 may be mounted on the shaft 17 by a plate having projections 41, 42 to engage the pin 38 to limit the rotation of the shaft.
