Abstract

[Also in Division Al] A rotary mower comprises a chassis 1, 2; a cutter rotatable about a vertical axis with a plurality of blades 16 attached; and a steerable front wheel 7 located within the locus of the cutter blades. A vertical shaft 3 mounted in the chassis and rotatable through 360 degrees has attached at one end a steering wheel 4 or a steering arm and at the other end a bracket 5 mounting a roller 7. A first motor (not shown) drives a sleeve 9 mounted on bearings 22 on the vertical shaft 3 by means of a belt (not shown) engaging a pulley 10 integral with the sleeve. A sprocket 23 at the lower end of the sleeve 9 drives by means of a chain (not shown) a further sprocket 24 on a drive shaft 11 of a bevel gear-box 12 mounted on the bracket 5 by a support 25. The output shaft 13 of the gearbox 12 has a sprocket 26 which drives a sprocket 8 attached to the roller 7 by means of a chain 21. A second motor (not shown) drives a pulley 14 coaxially mounted on bearings 27 on the sleeve 9, and attached to a flange 28 integral with the pulley are angled arms 15 with cutter blades 16 secured at their lower ends. The motors are housed in the chassis in an engine bay 18 situated beneath a seat 19. Alternatively, one motor can be used to drive the roller and cutter when a variable speed pulley or a clutch may be used to vary the rotational speeds of the roller and cutter independently.
