Abstract
1,271,021. Continuous casting machines. SOC. DES ACIERS FINS DE L'EST. 2 April, 1969 [27 June, 1968], No. 17184/69. Addition to 1,166,817. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions C1 and F4] Continuous casting apparatus comprises a ladle 1, an intermediate vessel 20 and a mould 15, the intermediate vessel 20 having a duct 14 of sintered vitreous silica extending into the mould, a pipe 8 for introducing neutral or reducing gases into the chamber 21, and a passage 9 for introducing additives such as selenium, tellurium, aluminium, lead, lead sulphide, and iron sulphide into the molten metal contained in the vessel 20. A layer of slag 16 and 18 may be provided on the surfaces of the molten metal in the mould 15 and vessel 20, respectively. In an embodiment, Fig. 4, the intermediate vessel is tiltable about a trunnion 37 so that the slag 35 can be discharged after pouring has been completed. One or more baffles 30 may be provided within the main chamber of the intermediate vessel which may feed more than one mould. The nozzles of both the ladle 1 and the intermediate vessel 2 are provided with plugs (not shown) which may be controlled either manually or automatically.
