Abstract
1,268,183. Voltage detectors; electromedical measurements. A. E. M. ASH and J. W. T. ROOPE. July 8, 1969 [April 10, 1968], No. 17290/68. Headings G1N and G1U. Apparatus for detecting, and identifying the polarity of, low potential differences comprises a differential amplifier 1 and two threshold circuits 2, 3 which operate indicators 4A, 5A (e.g. lamps) when the amplifier output exceeds a positive or negative threshold respectively. Threshold circuits 2, 3 may be Schmitt triggers with a variable threshold, and amplifier 1 may have a zero adjustment. The apparatus may be energized from batteries, an indicator connected to Zener diode comparator 6 giving warning of low battery voltage. The apparatus is applicable to the measurement of biopotentials, e.g. for observing brain and heart potentials or detecting ovulation. For the latter, onset of ovulation is indicated by a change in the polarity of the potential between a vaginal probe, comprising a metal tube with a conductive silicon rubber sheath and insulating handle, and a belt lined with conductive silicon rubber placed around the leg.
