Abstract
1,267,201. Modified carbon fibres. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 1 Oct., 1969 [3 Oct., 1968], No. 47073/68. Heading C1A. Carbon fibres containing up to 2À5% by weight of boron substitutionally dissolved in the atomic lattice and substantially no boron carbide, and having a Young's modulus greater than 20 x 10<SP>6</SP> p.s.i., are prepared by submitting an organic polymer fibre to the combined effect of heat and longitudinal tension to produce carbon fibre and at some stage introducing a controlled quantity of boron into the material of the carbon fibre. The boron may be introduced by immersing a carbonized polyacrylonitrile fibre in an aqueous solution of a boron compound 'such as boric acid or by exposing carbon fibres to boron in the vapour phase at high temperature. After or during the introduction of boron the fibre may be graphitized. The modified fibres may be further treated by exposure to neutron radiation preferably with a flux of up to 2À7 x 10<SP>7</SP> neutrons cm.<SP>-2</SP>.
