Abstract
1,267,158. Heat shields. SOC. NATIONALE INDUSTRIELLE AEROSPATIALE. 26 Feb., 1970 [27 Feb., 1969], No. 9426/70. Heading A5A. [Also in Division H1] A protective enclosure for dissipating external heat from a heat-sensitive device, e.g. an aircraft "black box", the instrument nosecone of a spacecraft, or a fireproof door or partition, comprises a hot wall and a cool wall enclosing successive laminated hydrator, superheater and porous refractory elements, the hydrator being in contact with the cool wall, and the hot wall embodying saturated steam outlet orifices. Enclosure 27 for flight data recorder 42 comprises steel envelope 30 forming a hot outer wall, and aluminium alloy wall 5 as the cool inner wall. Hydrator I is an aqueous gel contained by polyethylene membranes 32. Silica mesh fabric 33 encloses quartz superheating mattress 2. Porous insulating shield 31 of resin and asbestos fibre intercommunicates via peripheral channels 17 with silicone-plugged orifices 9 in envelope 30. When the enclosure is subject to external heat, aqueous gel 1 vaporises, forcing membrane 32 through silica mesh 33 and allowing saturated steam to pass into superheater 2 and via insulator 31 to outlets 9. Plugs 34, 35 surrounding impregnated silica fabric 36 provide protective outlets for electric cables 37.
