Abstract

1,266,689. Transporting special loads. T. HOWE. 24 June, 1969 [2 Aug., 1968], No. 36891/68. Headings B7B and B4L. [Also in Division B8] The loading supporting deck of a railway wagon or road vehicle for carrying coils of wire or rod has substantially flat side portions 72 on both sides of a central trough and a plurality of opposed pairs of support members pivotally mounted to be swung between a position in the trough, thereby forming part of a substantially flat support deck, and a position on the side portion 72 in which a surface 86 of the support members forms a continuation of the sides of the trough. Each support member comprises a sheet metal fabrication with a wooden board 90 secured to one surface and a plurality of wooden slats 94 secured to another surface in spaced array so as to alternate, when the support member is in the trough, with similar slats 96 secured to the sides of the trough. The support members are pivotally secured to the deck by links 98 and have lifting rings (104), Fig. 5 (not shown), to facilitate handling.
