Abstract
1,266,506. Moulding silicon bodies. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 15 Oct., 1969 [1 Oct., 1968], No. 46625/68. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C1] A compacted silicon powder article is made by forming a dough-like material from silicon powder and a binder containing a thermoplastic resin and a solvent, evaporating a portion of the solvent thereby forming a semi-dried cake, consolidating the semi-dried cake by repeated hot milling thereof, forming the consolidated mixture into the desired shape and removing the remaining solvent from the formed article by heating. Preferably the binder comprises a solution of poly(butyl methacrylate) in trichloroethylene, the initial solvent removal takes place at room temperature and the remainder is removed at 130‹ C. after hot milling at 45-50‹ C. The proportions of silicon powder and binder are preferably 65% to 35% by weight. The article may then be converted to silicon nitride by heating in nitrogen, initially at 1000‹ C. and then at higher temperatures to complete the conversion.
