Abstract
1,266,340. Disproportionating olefins. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 16 Sept., 1969 [6 Nov., 1968], No.29581/71.. Divided out of 1,266,339. Heading C5E. One or more olefins of the formula where the R substituents represent H, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl or aryl groups are disproportionated with a heterogeneous catalyst comprising (i) a salt of Mo or W, (ii) an organometallic compound of a Group Ia, IIa, IIb, IIIb or IVb metal and (iii) a solid support. The reaction may be carried out at -100‹ to 300‹ C., at 10 mm. Hg-2000 p.s.i.g. in the gas or liquid phases, optionally in the presence of a gaseous or liquid diluent. Preferred catalyst components are (i) WCl 6 or MOCl 5 , (ii) EtAlCl 2 , Al(nBu) 3 or Sn(nBu) 4 , (iii) Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 - SiO 2 , MgO, sepiolite, B 2 O 3 , ThO 2 , charcoal, pumice, molecular sieves, phosphates, silicates, aluminates or sulphates. The catalyst may be activated by the presence of an organic compound containing a hydroxy or thiol group. Examples describe the disproportionation of pentane-2 to butene-2 and hexene-3, and of propane-2 to ethylene and butene-2. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,208,083.
