Abstract
1,264,848. Wells &c. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ. N.V. 21 May, 1969 [29 May, 1968], No. 25846/ 69. Heading E1F. A marine conductor 36 yieldably suspended from a vessel 11 by a constant tension device 37 is connected to an underwater wellhead 21 by positioning the conductor over the wellhead, maintaining the distance between the wellhead and a wellhead connector 42 on the conductor, substantially constant, and pulling down the conductor to engage the connector with the wellhead, the method preventing damage to the conductor and wellhead due to vertical movement of the vessel. A line 31 fixed to the wellhead extends over a pulley 32 to a winch 34 on the vessel, and a pull-down line extends from a winch 64 on the vessel over a pulley 63 and beneath a pulley 57 fixed to the line 31 to the conductor, the pulleys 32, 63 being mounted on a bar 33 connected by a constant tension device 66 to the vessel. The arrangement is such that rise or fall of the vessel is accompanied by extension or contraction of the devices so that the distance between the connector and wellhead remains constant. The winch 64 is operated to pull down the connector onto the wellhead.
