Abstract
1,264,428. Electrocoating compositions. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 21 May, 1969 [1 July, 1968], No. 25983/69. Headings C3B, C3P and C3R. [Also in Division C7] Electrocoating compositions comprise an aqueous dispersion having a film-forming polymeric binder content of 0À5-40% by weight and a pH of 6À5-9À5, said binder consisting of (A) 25-75% by weight, based on total binder, of one or more high acid carboxylic polymers having an acid number of 35-150 and (B) 75-25% by weight of one or more low acid number carboxylic polymers having an acid number of 1-30, the high and low acid polymers having a number average molecular weight of 1000 to 100,000, a difference in acid number of at least 15, and a glass transition temperature in the range 250-395‹ K.; said binder being neutralized with sufficient of a water-soluble basic compound to form a waterdispersible anionic poly electrolyte. In a modification, polymer (A) may be a hard carboxylic polymer having a glass transition temperature of 275-340‹ K. and polymer (B) a soft carboxylic polymer having a glass transition temperature of 175-285‹ K., the difference in glass transition temperature of the polymers being at least 10‹ K., and the polymers have acid numbers of 1-300, with the binder having an overall acid number of at least 5. The compositions may also include pigment particles in a pigment volume concentration of less than 30%, and 1-30% by weight, based on the binder, of a heat reactive condensate. The pigment may be inorganic or organic; iron oxide and strontium chromate are preferred pigments. Preferred heat reactive condensates are hexamethoxymethylmelamine and butylated melaimne-formaldehyde resin. In the examples the following acid polymers are used as component (A) or (B): (a) styrene / methyl methacrylate / 2 - ethylhexyl acrylate / 2 - hydroxypropyl methacrylate / (meth)acrylic acid copolymers, (b) a reaction product of styrene/allyl alcohol copolymer with tall oil fatty acid and maleic anhydride, (c) a reaction product of styrene / allyl alcohol copolymer with maleic anhydride, (d) a reaction product of Epon epoxy resin with tall oil fatty acid and maleic anhydride, (e) a reaction product of epoxidized soya bean oil with 12-hydroxystearic acid and maleic anhydride, (f) poly-(12-hydroxystearic acid) and (g) a reaction product of hydrogenated bisphenol A, 1,5-pentane diol, dehydrogenated castor oil and trimellitic anhydride. In the examples, the binder is neutralized with dimethylethanolamine and, in some cases, diacetone alcohol and/or acetone is included in the compositions. The compositions can be modified to serve as replenishment concentrates for electrocoating cells; in such cases, the polymeric binder content is increased to 40-95% by weight and the binder is neutralized with 1-10%, by weight of the binder, of a water-soluble basic compound. The copolymers (a) mentioned above are prepared by polymerizing the corresponding monomers in diacetone alcohol using di-t-butyl peroxide as catalyst.
