Abstract
1,263,943. Preparation of polymer/pigment compositions. CIBA GEIGY (U.K.) Ltd. 21 April, 1970 [22 April, 1969], No. 20449/69. Heading C3P. [Also in Division C4] A process for preparing a pigment composition comprises: mixing an aqueous presscake of pigment with an aqueous dispersion of an emulsion copolymer of styrene and one or more alkyl acrylates or one or more alkyl methacrylates, in which the alkyl group has 1-12 carbon atoms, the polymer particles being of size 0À02 to 1À0 Á and the copolymer containing 70 to 30 pts. by wt. of styrene units and, correspondingly, 30 to 70 pts. by wt. of (meth)- acrylate units; coagulating the mixture at a temperature of from ambient to the boil; removing the aqueous phase from the coagulum; kneading the plastic mass; and cooling and pulverizing the resulting solid mass to a powder. The process is preferably carried out using a styrene/ethyl acrylate copolymer, in a twin blade internal mixer or kneader. Coagulation may be effected by the addition of an acidic electrolyte such as HCl or H 2 SO 4 , by the addition of an acidic, neutral or alkaline salt such as NaCl, CaCl 2 , NH 4 Cl, KHSO 4 , Na 2 SO 4 or (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , or by the addition of a surface active agent which dissociates to give a major amount of ions of opposite charge to those obtained from the emulsifying agent used in producing the polymer. After coagulation the mixture is preferably heated to 90-100‹ C. whereby the coagulum melts to form a plastic mass, and the aqueous medium is decanted off. Kneading is carried out at at least 60‹ C. for a sufficient time to deagglomerate the pigment and disperse it uniformly. The pigment compositions thus formed may be used to pigment inks or lacquers based on for example polyvinyl chloride, nitrocellulose, or zinc resinate, polymeric thermoplastic materials such as polyvinylchloride, polystyrene, ABS terpolymer or cellulose triacetate, in amounts of from 1 to 10% by wt. based on the ink, lacquer or thermoplastic material. Polyolefins such as polyethylene, polypropylene and copolymers thereof may also be pigmented with 1 to 40% by wt., based on the polyolefine, of the invention compositions.
