Abstract
1,263,340. Pearls of expanded polystyrene. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT GOBAIN. 21 Feb., 1969 [27 March, 1968], No. 9428/69. Addition to 1,082,630. Headings C3C and C3P. Pearls of expanded polystyrene are made from polystyrene granules containing a blowing agent, by heating the granules with air at 90- 130‹ C. and treating them with steam (as in Specification 1,082,630) and then treating the pearls in an autoclave with steam. The granules may be pre-expanded with saturated steam, expanded with the hot air followed by saturated steam, matured, expanded with the hot air followed by superheated steam, matured, treated with steam in the autoclave and finally matured: the maturing may be effected by standing at 70‹ C. or room temperature. The pearls may have an apparent bulk density of 2À5 kg./m.<SP>3</SP> and may be agglomerated to form articles, e.g. panels or shaped pieces.
