An apparatus for cutting a web of material, e.g. film, while in motion comprises a rotary drum 21 having a radial slot 25 with which a cutter arm 35 is arranged to co-operate under the control of a cam 19 such that, in operation, the cutter arm will cut through a web on the drum at the slot and will descend, together with the cut edge of the web, into the slot and remain in the slot for a predetermined period. The drum 21 is mounted on a shaft 11 which is rotatable in a housing 16, a plate 18 being fixed thereto and provided with a cam track 19. The knife arm is pivotally mounted on a bracket which is secured to the drum and is oscillated relative to the drum by a cam follower 40 via gears 37, 38. In operation, perforated film is fed on to the drum and engaged by teeth 22 thereon. Rotation of the drum then causes the knife to pivot and cut through film, an enlargement (43), Fig. 4 (not shown), on the knife depressing the leading end of the film into the slot. At the moment of cutting a pair of fingers (56), Fig. 5 (not shown), are moved by means of a cam-and lever mechanism (51), (52), (54), (55) into contact with the edges of the film so as to hold the latter during continued rotation. After a certain rotation of the drum the knife rises out of the slot, the enlargement then lifts the free end of the film and guides it between a pair of spaced shoot members, the fingers then being released.
