1,261,575. Making coke. REPUBLIC CARBON PRODUCTS CO. Inc. 22 April, 1969, No. 20408/69. Heading C5E. Metallurgical coke is made from fluid petroleum coke or gilsonite coke by mixing particles of the coke with a carbonaceous binder, e.g. charred coal tar or charred petroleum tar, compacting and extruding the mixture, cutting lumps off the extruded mixture, and coking the lumps. In. an illustrated embodiment of a continuous process, the initial particulate coke is preshrunk by heating to 1600‹ to 1800‹ F., cooled, and fractured in an impact mill or roll crusher The coke, optionally with added desulphurizing agents, is mixed with the binder, which may form 8 to 18% b.w. of the mix and is in fluid form, and the mixture, degassed by a vacuum pump, is passed to the extruder. Lumps are cut off the extruded rod and delivered to an endless belt which traverses a direct-fired kiln in which a temperature of 1100‹ to 2500‹ F. is attained. Coking times of 2 to 15 hours are mentioned.
