The inclination of the backrest of a chair is adjusted by rotation of a cylinder 4 about a pin 6 causing movement of the backrest support 8 about a pivot 9 due to the engagement of the torqueshaped end 7 of the support in a groove 5 on the surface of the cylinder. The cylinder and support member are mounted on a bracket 11 which has a slot 13 for attachment of the seat 1 to the bracket by a bolt 12. Loosening of the bolt 12 enables the seat to be moved horizontally so that the distance between the seat and backrest can be adjusted.
