Abstract

1,259,459. Pressure-sensitive adhesive coating. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. 20 May, 1969 [30 July, 1968], No. 36357/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] Pressure-sensitive adhesives comprise an aqueous dispersion of a polymer comprising units of 3-6% by weight of acrylic or methacrylic acid, 3-10% by weight of methyl methacrylate or acrylonitrile, and 84-94% by weight of at least one acrylate ester of a primary C 4 -C 8 alkanol, the dispersion including, as an anionic emulsifier, a sulphated alkylphenoxy polyethoxy ether whose alkyl group has 8-14 carbon atoms. A cross-linking agent may be added to the dispersion, e.g. a salt of a polyvalent metal, an oxide or hydroxide of Ba, Ca, Mg or Sr, or a hydroxide of Al, Pb or Zr; basic aluminium acetate, basic aluminium formate, basic zirconyl acetate, and zinc magnesium and calcium acetates are specifically mentioned. Other optional components include pigments, colouring agents, anti foams and fungicides. The adhesive compositions may be coated on textiles, paper or plastics materials to provide adhesive tapes for use in electrical insulation or book-binding, and as decorative tapes, marking tapes, adhesive labels, transfer tapes and surgical tapes.
