Abstract
1,257,790. Well packers. B. J. WOOLLEY. 17 Dec., 1968 [20 Dec., 1967], No. 60026/68. Heading E1F. A well packer or bridge plug comprises an annular layer 26 of elastomeric material mounted on a mandrel 20, the layer being slit or having weakened zones permitting rupturing of the layer on application of an axial force to the layer, so that on axial compression of the layer portions thereof move to radially overlie other portions to substantially increase the diameter of the layer. The layer may have a helical Y-shape cut extending from end to end, or a helical slit extending radially through the layer. There may be a plurality of helical cuts in each direction. Alternatively the layer may be composed of a plurality of blocks glued together but rupturable along the glue lines. The tool may be set mechanically, hydraulically, or by an explosive charge causing piston rod 18 connected to mandrel 20 by a weakened zone to move the mandrel upwardly, thus breaking shear pins and causing upper slip assembly 23 to be set, upper and lower sets of fingers 28, 28 to be cammed outwardly and compress layer 23, and lower slip assembly 30 to be set. Snubber 22 has teeth to prevent mandrel 20 moving downwardly to release the tool. The mandrel adjacent lower slip assembly 30 may have slots formed in the surface to permit stretching of the mandrel.
