Abstract
1,256,580. Catalytic burners. SOGENA SpA. 17 Sept., 1969 [26 Nov., 1968; 30 April, 1969], No. 45732/69. Heading F4T. A catalytic burner comprises a catalytic mass 16 situated between perforated inner and outer tubes 4, 6, the outer tube 6 being connected to an electrical source so as to act as a preheating resistance for taking the catalytic mass to the starting temperature of the catalytic reaction. The burner has a hollow base member 1 connected via an insulator 36 with a gas feeding tube 34 and containing a leaf spring 37 connected to the tube 34 and carrying a contact 38. A bimetal plate 27 acts on the leaf spring 37 and carries a valve 28 controlling the flow of gas into the base 1, so that when the burner is cold the valve 28 is closed and the contact 38 is urged into contact with a further contact 39 connected to an electrical source. Current thus flows through the leaf spring 37, the tube 34, a dish 31 and the outer tube 6 to the base 1. When the burner is hot the bimetal plate 27 moves to open the valve 28 and allow the leaf spring 37 to separate the contacts 38, 39. The tube 34 may be of copper, the outer tube may be of expanded nickel-chrome, and the catalytic mass 16 may comprise asbestos flakes coated with catalyst.
