Abstract

1,255,660. Polyurethane foams. INTERPOLYMER RESEARCH CORP. 5 Dec., 1968 [19 Dec., 1967], No. 57887/68. Headings C3C and C3R. Polyurethane foams having dense surface skins thereon are prepared by mixing a formulation comprising (a) a poly(oxyalkylene)polyol containing secondary or a mixture of secondary and primary hydroxyl groups, or mixtures thereof, in an amount of 45 to 70 weight per cent of the total formulation, (b) a hydroxyl compound containing primary hydroxyl groups or a compound containing primary or secondary amine groups in an amount of 5 to 15 weight per cent of the total formulation, (c) an isocyanate, (d) a foam forming catalyst and (e) a foaming agent to form a homogeneous mixture which is then foamed in a mould. Preferred compounds (a) are propylene oxide-polyol adducts which may be capped with ethylene oxide. The compound (b) may be an aliphatic diol, alkylene glycol, reaction products of lactones with alkylene glycols and hydroxyl polyesters. Suitably the isocyanate (c) is a mixture of diphenylmethane diisocyanate isomers and a liquid carbodiimide derived from diphenylmethane diisocyanate isomers. The catalyst (d) may be a tertiary amine and/or a lead or tin compound. In a typical example a mixture is formed of an ethylene oxide capped propylene oxide adduct, diethylene glycol, N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP> - tetramethyl - 1,3 - butane diamine, dibutyl tin dilaurate, water and a polyisocyanate based on diphenylmethane diisocyanate and the mixture is poured into a mould maintained at 55‹ C. to form a form having a dense integral skin. Uses.-In the manufacture of crash pads, arm rests and head rests and in the furniture industry.
