Abstract
1,255,090. Electrostatic spraying. NIPPON KOGEI KOGYO CO. Ltd. 27 Nov., 1969 [26 March, 1969; 11 June, 1969 (2)], No. 58101/69. Heading B2F. Apparatus for electrostatically coating powders on a workpiece comprises a rotary projection head 5 provided with angled nozzle pipes 3 which can be adjusted as shown in Fig. 2 to increase or decrease the spread of the projected powder. The head 5 is mounted on a tube 6 of insulating material supported in bearings 9a, 9b within an insulating sleeve 11, the tube 6 being driven by an electric motor 8 through a belt 8b. A high voltage supply 12 is connected through the bearing 9a to the head 5, so that, in operation, a field is produced between the head and the article 14 to be coated. Coating powder, e.g. polyethylene powder, is entrained in compressed air and supplied to the head through the tube 6. The powder projecting apparatus is associated with a powder supplying device comprising a hopper 30 beneath which is a trough 31 mounted on a vibrator 33. A control device 32 is adjustable to vary the amplitude of vibrations of the trough and hence meter the amount of powder delivered to a powderair mixer B. The mixer, Fig. 8, has a powder inlet 38, a compressed air inlet 39 and a powder-air mixture outlet 40 which is connected by a flexible line 2 and the tube 6 to the rotary projection head 5. A pair of mixers may be supplied by the vibrating trough, the powder being distributed between them by a controlling member 34. The electric drive motor 8 may be replaced by an air motor reducing the weight of the projector so that it may be hand-held as a gun.
