Abstract

1,254,349. Polymerization process. BP CHEMICALS Ltd. 4 May, 1970 [5 May, 1969], No. 22776/69. Heading C3P. Ethylenically unsaturated monomers are polymerized in aqueous suspension in the presence of an acylperoxycarbonate initiator formed in situ from a peracid R(CO.O.OH) n and a haloformate R<SP>1</SP>OCOX where R and R<SP>1</SP> are organic radicals, X is halogen and n is an integer. In the examples vinyl chloride is polymerized using as the acid percaprylic, dipersebacic or peracetic acid and as the haloformate ethyl chloroformate, which is added with the monomer.
