A refractory article is obtained by filling a mould with a mixture of particles of a refractory and 0À5-10% of one or more of Mg, Al, Cr, Be and alloys containing them, compressing at a pressure high enough to cause the metal to flow, removing the shape from the mould, and firing in an O 2 containing atmosphere at at least 1200%. Specified refractories are Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , MgO, BeO, chrome-magnesia, carbon, calcined dolomite, sillimanite and mullite. The article can be a single or mixed oxide according to the pairing chosen.
