Abstract

[Also in Division B2] An insulating layer of rigid closed cell polymeric foam is applied to a substrate by heat activating an initial coating of rapidly reacting polymeric foam producing components on the substrate and applying at least one further coating of the same or other rapidly reacting polymeric foam producing components over the foamed initial coating so that the further coating is activated autogenously by the heat of the initially applied foamed coating. The polymeric foam may be produced by the reaction of rapidly reacting polyisocyanate and polyol components in the presence of an inert volatizable blowing agent, e.g. trichlorofluoromethane. The foam producing components may be applied by spraying. The heat required for activation of the initial coating may be provided by pre-heating the substrate or by the subsequent application of heat to the initial coating e.g. by means of radiant heat electric lamps. Cooling may be effected between each application of the coatings to prevent overheating and ensure controlled uniform expansion of the foam. Machining of the top surface of the foamed polymeric mass may be effected by means of a planing machine and of the side edges by means of rotary cutters of desired profile. The substrate may be flat, e.g. plasterboard, or profiled, e.g. corrugated metal sheets. Building panels may be produced by coating the surface of the foam with a polyurethane elastomer and then bonding thereto asbestos felt coated with polyvinyl chloride, before curing of the elastomer is complete.
