Abstract

1,249,814. Depolymerizing cellulose ethers. DOW CHEMICAL CORP. 2 June, 1969 [13 June, 1968], No. 27851/69. Heading C3A. A water-soluble cellulose ether is depolymerized by irradiating a solid water-soluble cellulose ether at 75‹ to 125‹ C. in the presence of oxygen with gamma radiation at a dose rate of 10 to 2000 Krad./hr. The cellulose ether, which may be irradiated in the form of a freeflowing particulate solid, is preferably given a total dose of 1À4 to 2À3 Mrads. of gamma irradiation. In particular, the viscosity of a watersoluble cellulose ether having a 2% by weight aqueous solution viscosity at 20‹ C. of 50- 4000 centipoises is reduced to give an ether with a 2% by weight viscosity of 2-25 centipoises. The cellulose ether may be an alkyl-, carboxyalkyl- or hydroxyalkyl ether, e.g. hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose.
