Abstract
124,779. Chown, J. A. March 25, 1916. Ordnance design; chambers; sound of discharge, modifying.-Consists in providing the muzzle of a gun with a valve worked by the gas check of the projectile to divert the gun gases into a silencer and then to eject the gas check. In the form shown, a tube g is fixed to the muzzle of a gun barrel f and contains another tube h, which is normally held inwards by a spring o interposed between rings m, i on the tubes g, h respectively. The rings m, i have each an axial hole for the passage of the projectile' a of streamline form; but the sabot c, which is normally secured to the projectile by means of wax, is checked by the ring i and drives this ring forwards, compressing the spring o and opening the ports p, r to divert the gun gases through a tube q to a silencer. Near the end of this action a plunger l on the ring m is depressed by the ring i and ejects the sabot c into the tube q. The Provisional Specification describes also (1) a sabot having a front steel part cut to fit the rifling of the gun and a rear gas check copper washer, and (2) a cartridge case made with one or more projections to fit recesses in the chamber of the gun, and cartridge cases and gun chambers made of square or many-sided sections to ensure the correct alinement of the cut steel part of the sabot with the rifling of the gun.
