A method of tying up a hank of relatively large width whilst the hank is on the reel on which it has been wound comprises the causing of a thread H, Fig. 1, to be placed adherently to an inner face of the hank, causing the thread H to be drawn up at equal intervals through the hank so as to form protruing loops 0, passing an upper thread L through the loops 0, and knotting the threads H, L to each other at the edges of the hank as at K. This process is repeated for the other hank that may be on the reel. The apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a box Q, Fig. 7, mounted on rails (not shown) above and parallel to the reel axis. The box carries a motor 38 that drives (a) first gearing for causing the box to move in steps, with a pause between each step, along the aforesaid rails; (b) second gearing for causing a hook 21 to make a scythe shaped reciprocating plunge down through the hank whilst the box Q is stationary; (c) third gearing causing a transfer hook 44 to move the resulting loop O off the hook 21 and onto a collector 2 to which the thread L is tied; (d) means causing a hammer 37 to repeatedly strike the collector 2 to vibrate it and so cause the loops to slide off the collector 2 and onto the thread L. To enable the loops O to pass down the collector 2 the collector 2 is loosely mounted in a shell 13 the lower generatrix of which is open, the vibrations delivered by the hammer 37 vibrating the collector 2 sufficiently to allow the loops O to slide along in the resulting air gap between the collector 2 and the shell 13.
