Abstract
1,138,974. Welding by fusion. HOLDING INTERCITO S.A. 28 April, 1966 [2 June, 1965], No. 18782/66. Heading B3R. [Also in Division C7] An agglomerated submerged arc welding flux in the form of a substantially non-conductive granulate comprises slag forming components and at least 50% by weight of metallic components, the flux containing at least 30% by weight of "unalloyed" iron and each granule having the same composition as the overall flux. The slag forming components which form at least 5% of the flux may be CaF 2 , SiO 2 or a silicate such as calcium or zirconium silicate, MnO, CaO, BaO, MgO, ZrO 2 , Al 2 O 3 . The metals in addition to Fe may be Mn, Si, Cr, Ni, Mo, V, Nb, B, Zr, Ti, Al, Mg, Ca. The flux is formed by granulating the components with water glass and heating at 300‹ to 500‹ C. The Fe powder used is larger than the other powders, e.g. 0À5-1 mm., so that the preferred granules formed consist of the coarse Fe particles enveloped by the slag forming constituents. Examples of specific compositions are given and the flux is used for the submerged arc welding of steel.
